Man Drowns During Fishing Trip In Cheatham CoCHAPMANSBORO, Tenn.- Cheatham County officials recovered the body of a fisherman whose boat capsized Thursday morning on the Cumberland River. Rescue personnel found the body of Donnie Morris, 39. He fished with a friend just before dawn when strong currents capsized their boat. Steve Christy swam to shore and called for help. Morris never resurfaced. Officials found his body just before 2 p.m. "Evidently, the current being so strong, that it just ripped his jacket off him," said a friend. "When they found his jacket it was down by the ramp. It was still buckled." The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shut down the Cheatham County Dam so that there wouldn't be a current during the search. Different agencies assisted in the search including the Stewart County Sheriff's Office's canine unit. "They got up in there close to the dam," said a friend who also frequently fishes in the area. "We always get real close and drop our anchor and back out because if you stay in there too close, the dam starts pulling you in. So as they were backing out, the motor died. The boat got turned sideways and all that rapid current just pushed it over. As it tilted to one side, it filled up with water and went down immediately." Morris is survived by three children. |
