Cuyamaca: Supervising ranger Willard Lepley said the season's
first trout plant will be tried this week if the water cools sufficiently.
Lake is down 4 vertical feet. Trout starting to stir as water dips below
70 degrees. Channel catfish and crappie also biting. Samuel Mercado,
Santee, 15-8 channel catfish, mackerel-night crawler combo, Boat. Don
Mumper, San Diego, was the Bullhead-A-Thon winner with 146 bullheads.
Orville P. Ball Memorial Fishin' In the Pines Kids Fishing Derby,
Christmas on the Mountain in September, is set for Sept. 22, also National
Hunting and Fishing Day (no state fishing license required). Lake will be
brimming with trout. Lots of raffle prizes, free goodie bag for each
youngster and prizes for big fish in several age categories. Open daily.
Dixon: Bigger bass biting. Justin Fools of Escondido caught and
released an 11-pound bass. Open daily.
El Capitan: The 125 anglers checked reported 1 bass kept (200 bass
released), 18 crappie, 15 channel catfish and 3 blue catfish. Open
Thursdays and Mondays for fishing only (permits must be purchased at the
iron rangers on Mondays); Friday through Sunday for fishing and water
contact (skiing, wakeboarding and Jet Skis, etc.).
Henshaw: Good for catfish and bass. Jeff Hunter, Menifee, 20
channel catfish (all released) up to 2 pounds. Kyle Bishop caught
and released 7 bass up to 2-2. Harry Majewski and Mike Lee,
San Diego, 7 crappie. Open daily.
Hodges: The 183 fishermen checked reported 12 bass kept (107 bass
released), 83 crappie, 18 bluegill and 14 channel catfish. Joseph Zizzo,
San Diego, 6.35 channel catfish, shiner, dam. Tim Green, Oceanside,
stringer of bass, 18 pounds with a 5.20-pounder, all over. Open Wednesday,
Saturday and Sunday.
Jennings: Fishing should improve as the water cools. Anglers
fly-lining night crawlers catching bass. Twilight special for motorboats:
$20 after 5 p.m. Trout season opens Oct. 19 following a plant of 2,000
pounds of rainbow trout. Open Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Loveland: The 76 anglers checked reported 2 bass kept (47 bass
released), 26 bluegill, 3 channel catfish, 2 carp, 1 crappie. Murrel
Vailes, San Diego, 14-8 channel catfish, mackerel, Area 8. Open daily.
Miramar: The 41 anglers checked reported 3 bass kept (8 bass
released), 7 bluegill and 6 channel catfish. Open daily to fishing and
boating.
Morena: Open daily.
Murray: The 91 anglers checked reported 1 bass kept (11 bass
released), 60 bluegill. Open daily to fishing and boating.
Otay, Lower: the 203 anglers checked reported 14 bass kept (86 bass
released), 178 bluegill, 22 channel catfish and 2 redear sunfish. Mel
Williams, Chula Vista, 2 bass (released), 12.00 with a 6.70, topwater
lure, Otay Arm. Michelle Hegue, Spring Valley, 6.45 bass
(released), rat lure, Otay Arm. Nick Lerma, Chula Vista, 3 bass
(released), Gene Allman's Secret Weapon, all over. Open Wednesday,

Otay, Upper: The 21 anglers checked reported 22 bass, all released.

Poway: Slow, with a few channel catfish and bass caught. Discounts on
permits and boat rentals for Sept. 22 National Hunting and Fishing Day, a
day no state fishing license is required. Open Wednesday through Sunday.
Santee Lakes: National Hunting and Fishing Day celebration scheduled
here Sept. 29 (one week after it's celebrated in most places, but because
it's here, no state fishing license required, permits still apply). Open

released), 44 bluegill, 15 channel catfish and 1 blue catfish. Kevin

Darryl “Doc” Carter, San Diego, stringer of catfish, 28.2 with a 8.20,
mackerel, Santa Ysabel Arm. Leonard Jones, San Diego, 7.60 bass

Sweetwater: The 109 anglers checked reported 5 bass kept (42 bass
released), 19 carp, 10 channel catfish, 3 crappie. Open Saturday, Sunday
and Monday.
Wohlford: Temporary ban on private boat launches, canoes, kayaks,
float tubes, trolling motors, fish finders and anchors due to quagga
mussels. Fishing has been fair for channel catfish and bass. Avery

East Cape: Hurricane Henriette dumped rain for 24 hours, leaving
between 14 and 17 inches of rain and muddying the waters, but it didn't do
much structural damage, according to John Ireland at Rancho Leonero
Resort. He's hoping fishing returns to its excellent form – marlin,
dorado, tuna and roosterfish all good – pre-hurricane. Good bait supply.
Cabo San Lucas: Despite Hurricane Henriette, boats averaging a couple
billfish per trip. Dorado and yellowfin also showing.

Results of the San Diego Council of Bass Clubs' Kevin Mineo Night
Tournament Saturday at El Capitan: Winners, Vicki Becker and
Terry Chenowth, 13.86 pounds with a 5.23-pounder; second, Ryan
Ransom and Erin Crist, 12.92 pounds. Third, John Grabowski
and Ernie Marugg, 11.83 pounds. Top 20 Fishoff is set for Oct.
6 to crown the top team of the season.
Results of the Fifth Annual La Jolla Kayak Fishing Steve Moyer Memorial
Tournament: Larry Laumann, no stranger to big fish caught from his
kayak, took the top prize with a 30.5-pound yellowtail and took home the
Hobie Revolution kayak; top halibut, 11.5 pounds by Kiyo Sato,
winning the Mailbu XFactor kayak; white seabass, William Stone for
a 12-pounder, winning the OK Trident kayak; bonito, Peter Spillar,
4.9-pounder, to win the Wilderness Systems Tarpon 160 kayak. Laumann also
won $400 in the jackpot. Matt Rabasco, with a 24-pound yellowtail,
won $200. William Stone earned $100 for the 12-pound white seabass.
Nancy Ortiz was the top lady angler. Organizer Jim Sammons
of La Jolla Kayak Fishing said the tournament raised $12,488 for the
American Cancer Society in Steve Moyer's name.
Sierra: Dave Paules, San Diego, leads the fishing derby at Annett's
Mono Village at Upper Twin Lake west of Bridgeport with a 5-5 rainbow
trout he fooled with a green wooly bugger.
Meeting: Join fellow boaters and others Thursday night at 6 to discuss
proposed improvements of the Shelter Island Launch Ramp. The meeting is in
the Training Room of the Port of San Diego's Administration Building at
3165 Pacific Highway. Several launch ramp improvement options will be
discussed. Some of the alternatives including repositioning the dock,
enlarging the boat basin and constructing a floating breakwater.
