The owner of a popular fly fishing store in North Carolina which has been
open for seven years has told a local website the secrets to his success.
Stewart Gordon, who runs The Green Drake, says that it has been a hard slog
to keep the business running, adding that "you have to continue to work hard
at it".
Mr Gordon told jornalnow.com that he has taken a number of measures
throughout the years to keep people interested in visiting the shop – one of
which is offering exotic fly fishing trips.
The 37-year-old explained that his store has now expanded into a fly fishing
school, with trips to Mexico, Montana, Wyoming and the Bahamas on offer along
with lessons.
"We'll do some saltwater fly-tying classes," Mr Gordon said. "We'll do
classes for smallmouth bass."
The popularity of fly fishing in the country has declined in recent years,
with US Fish and Wildlife Service, reporting a 12 per cent drop in the number
of fishermen nationwide from 2001 to 2006.
But Mr Gordon believes that his efforts can have an impact on these figures
and help to bring the sport back into the mainstream, adding that when it
comes to participants, "it doesn't matter what age they are".
