Fishing event reels in family fun
Dozens braved the cooler weather to try something new this weekend.
Hart Park was the place to be for this year's 9th annual Family Fun
Fishing Day.
Over two dozen sponsors kicked in to supply rods, bait, t-shirts and
barbecue. Children and their parents attempted to catch the big one,
while spending quality time together.
"It's better than working," said Lupe Perez, father. Perez shows one of
his daughters the fine art of fishing, and he's no expert. Diane Allen
has fished many times with her daughter and granddaughter.
"I can't never catch a fish," said Chandra Allen, daughter. There
weren't any fish being caught at the time, but Saturday's Family Fun
Fishing event wasn't just about getting the catch of the day.
"We just want the kids to come out because a lot of times when they're
in town, in that concrete jungle, they get involved in other unhealthy
stuff and we want to teach them some healthy activities," said Isaiah
Crompton, event coordinator.
Steven Moehle is here with his buddy Cobey and they didn't seem to mind
waiting for the fish to start biting.
"The kids, many of them live in East Bakersfield and Southeast. Many of
them have never been to Hart Park or have ever fished or used a fishing
pole. It's about self esteem," said Nicole Parra, Assembly member,
D-Hanford.
Those who didn't reel in a fish were invited for barbecued ribs.
Organizers plan to have two family fishing days next year.
